What the Split Squat Is Really For

At Hardbody, we use the split squat as a supporting exercise, not the main event.

Its purpose:

Build strength in deep knee flexion
Improve ankle + knee range of motion
Strengthen the bottom of the squat
Clean up left–right imbalances
Prepare athletes for high-force skating mechanics

It’s knee-dominant, bottom-range biased, and perfect for athletes who need to improve control where most people are the weakest.

Hockey speed isn’t random. It’s physics.

To produce maximal force into the ice, a skater must hit specific joint angles—especially in the recovery stride.

Elite skaters consistently hit:

~32° shin angle
Deep knee flexion
Strong ankle dorsiflexion
Full weight transfer over the stance leg

The biggest problem youth skaters face?

They don’t have the mobility OR strength to get into these angles—let alone produce force there.

That’s why so many kids “run on skates,” stand tall, or lose their edge pressure.

What a GOOD Split Squat Looks Like at Hardbody

We don’t care how much weight you hold if the position isn’t right.

A proper Hardbody split squat includes:

Long stance (NOT 90/90)
Front knee travels forward over the toes
Big ankle dorsiflexion
Hamstring covers the calf
Forward/down pattern—not straight down
Upright torso
Back leg stretched but not rigid
Full range under control

This isn’t about chasing numbers. It’s about building capacity where speed, strength, and longevity live.

The Hardbody Split Squat Strength Standard

We use strength ratios—not as rules, but as guideposts:

Split Squat ≈ 41% of Back Squat

What this means:

If you’re BELOW this number → split squats are a HIGH-VALUE movement
If you’re AT or ABOVE this number → gains begin to stall, and it’s time for more advanced work

Once the split squat stops transferring?
We retire it and use something better.

When Split Squats Shine
1. Building the Prerequisites for Faster Skating

If your athlete can’t hit the joint angles needed for a powerful stride, their speed ceiling is LOW.

The split squat develops:

Ankle mobility
Knee flexion strength

These are MUST-HAVE prerequisites for:

– Stride length
– Edge power
– Recovery stride mechanics

To avoid wasting time, here’s when not to rely on split squats:

1. When someone already meets the strength standard

Past the 41% threshold, it stops transferring and becomes dead weight.

2. When torso collapses in a squat

This isn’t a quad issue—it’s posterior chain + core.

3. When used as a “mobility-only” cure

You need FAR more time in range than 3×8 can give.

4. When used as a hypertrophy tool for advanced lifters

You’ll outgrow the stability demands before the muscle demands.

  2. Load it progressively until the strength standard is reached
  3. Train twice per week if used as a priority

  5. Move on when it stops transferring
