At Hardbody, our goal is to deliver a training experience that combines world-class programming with world-class coaching. That doesn’t happen by accident — it happens by system.
Every session, every set, every rep is an opportunity to reinforce our standards and give athletes confidence that they’re on the right track. One of the most important blocks of any training session is the Primary Movement, and as coaches, how we deliver this block sets the tone for everything else.
This post outlines the Hardbody Coaching Delivery Standard for Primary Movements.
Step 1: Athlete Setup & Orientation
The moment an athlete walks onto the floor, we need to eliminate confusion and build clarity. That means:
- Assign their rack/station — no wandering, no wasted time.
- Have their phone open to TrainHeroic — today’s session should be visible and ready to follow.
- Give them an overview — explain what’s on deck so you know the flow and they know what to expect.
- Set them up physically — load the right bar, adjust J-hooks and pins, move the bench if needed. Even if they’ve done 600 sessions, provide clarity so they feel confident and cared for.
Athlete mindset check: They should feel, “My coach has me set up for success.”
Step 2: Coach the Primary Movement
This is where your coaching presence matters most. The primary lift is the backbone of the session.
- Form → Demand technical proficiency from the first warm-up rep to the last work set.
- Tempo → Hold athletes accountable to the prescribed tempo. Tempo builds discipline and control, not just strength.
- Rest → Manage rest intervals. Too short? Performance drops. Too long? Session flow breaks down.
- Clarity → Athletes should always know what’s expected next — no guessing.
Think of yourself as the director of traffic. If this block is clean, the rest of the session flows.
Step 3: Loading Protocol
Primary movements must be loaded with intent. We don’t just throw weight on the bar — we use a structured progression model.
Warm-Up Sets (Ramping to First Work Set)
- Set 1 → 6 reps @ 50% of first working set
- Set 2 → 4 reps @ 70% of first working set
- Set 3 → 2 reps @ 90% of first working set
These are not “throwaway” sets. They’re about grooving the pattern, priming the nervous system, and preparing joints and tissues.
Work Sets (Progression Logic)
- Hit all reps last session? Add weight (+2.5, +5, or +10 lbs depending on the lift).
- Missed reps last session?
- Missed just 1–2 reps in the final set → Repeat same load.
- Missed reps in multiple sets → Reduce load across all work sets.
The Golden Rule:
We ALWAYS prioritize…
- Technical proficiency
- Full range of motion
- Tempo execution
- Staying on time with the group flow
Why This Matters
Athletes don’t just need a program — they need a delivery system that builds confidence, consistency, and results. By following the Hardbody Delivery Standard, you:
- Keep the session running on time.
- Eliminate athlete confusion.
- Reduce risk of injury.
- Build trust and authority with every athlete you coach.
- Create an environment where athletes can focus on training instead of logistics.
When we deliver this block the right way, the rest of the session falls into place. Our athletes don’t just complete a workout — they experience a system that is structured, intentional, and world-class.
Coach’s Challenge
Next session you coach, ask yourself:
- Did I set every athlete up with absolute clarity?
- Did I coach form, tempo, and rest with intention?
- Did I adjust loading decisions based on data, not guesswork?
If the answer is yes, you’re delivering the Hardbody Standard.
