At Hardbody Personal Training, located in Plain City and Dublin, Ohio, we use proven systems like Al Vermeil’s Hierarchy of Athletic Development to guide our programs for athletes of all levels. Whether you’re an aspiring youth athlete or recovering from an injury, our philosophy ensures every training and rehabilitation program is tailored for success, focusing on injury prevention, optimal performance, and long-term development.
What Is Vermeil’s Hierarchy of Athletic Development?
Developed by Hall of Fame strength and conditioning coach Al Vermeil, this model organizes the stages of athletic development into a clear progression. Each stage builds upon the previous one, ensuring athletes develop the physical qualities they need to excel while reducing injury risk.
At Hardbody Personal Training, we’ve adapted Vermeil’s hierarchy to meet the needs of youth athletes, active individuals, and those returning from injury.
The Six Stages of Athletic Development
1. Evaluation and Testing
Before creating a program, we evaluate every athlete’s strengths, weaknesses, and unique needs through:
- Medical and training history reviews.
- Assessments of physical assets and deficits.
- Sport-specific considerations.
This ensures we design a plan that aligns with your goals while addressing potential risks.
2. Work Capacity
Work capacity is the foundation of athletic performance. It ensures athletes can perform exercises with proper form over time without excessive fatigue. Benefits include:
- Faster recovery between sessions.
- Increased endurance for prolonged games or tournaments.
- Reduced risk of overuse injuries like strains and tendinitis.
At Hardbody, we use methods like Javorek complexes—sequences of back-to-back exercises—to build work capacity while enhancing mobility, technical proficiency, and strength.
3. Strength
Strength is the cornerstone of athletic performance. It supports:
- Improved force production for speed and power.
- Enhanced joint stability and injury prevention.
- Greater confidence in athletic movement.
Stronger athletes perform better in competition, and our programs ensure that foundational strength development is prioritized.
4. Explosive Strength
This stage introduces velocity to movement. Exercises like jumps, throws, and Olympic lifts develop power by teaching athletes to apply force quickly. Explosive strength is critical for sports requiring sudden, dynamic actions like sprinting or jumping.
5. Elastic/Reactive Strength
Elastic strength relies on the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC)—the ability to store and release energy efficiently. This quality is developed through plyometric exercises, helping athletes maximize speed and power in quick, repetitive movements.
6. Speed
Speed combines strength, power, and technical proficiency to achieve maximum movement velocity. By refining mechanics and enhancing the qualities above, athletes improve their sprinting, jumping, and overall performance.
Adapting the Hierarchy for Rehabilitation
For injured athletes, we modify Vermeil’s hierarchy to include:
1. Mobility/Movement
Restoring joint mobility, soft tissue compliance, and movement patterns is essential after an injury. Athletes relearn basic movements like walking or lifting to prepare for more advanced training.
2. Muscle Reeducation/Work Capacity
Injuries can cause muscle inhibition, limiting strength and coordination. Through targeted exercises, we restore proper muscle activation and build a foundation for progress.
The Role of Stress and Recovery
The General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) model underpins our approach to applying stress (exercise intensity) and allowing recovery. Athletes must face progressively challenging stimuli to improve while avoiding overtraining. Proper recovery, including sleep, nutrition, and recovery techniques, is essential for sustained progress.
