At Hardbody Personal Training, located in Plain City and Dublin, Ohio, we understand that the holiday break can feel like a strange time for athletes. With routines disrupted and games paused, it’s easy to lose momentum. But this downtime presents a golden opportunity for reflection and planning to elevate your performance for the rest of the season.
Why Reflection and Goal Setting Matter
The season naturally breaks into three segments:
- Preseason and Early Season (September–December): Building foundations and testing your skills.
- Mid to Late Season (January–March): Refining your game and pushing for peak performance.
- Playoffs (if applicable): Executing under pressure when it matters most.
Taking time during the holiday break to reflect on your performance and set clear goals for the second half of the season ensures you come back ready to perform at your best.
The SMART Framework for Goal Setting
We use the SMART goal-setting framework because it’s simple, effective, and easy to follow. Here’s how to apply it:
- Specific: Set clear, targeted goals. For example, instead of “I want to get better,” aim for “I want to improve my shot accuracy by 10%.”
- Measurable: Ensure you can track progress. Use metrics like goals scored, assists, or performance stats to evaluate success.
- Attainable: Be realistic. If you scored five goals in the first half, don’t set a goal for 40 in the second half—set a target that stretches you but is achievable.
- Relevant: Align your goals with your overall purpose. If your primary aim is to improve offensive contributions, your goals should focus on skills and performance that support that aim.
- Time Sensitive: Set deadlines. For most athletes, the natural deadline is the end of the regular season.
How to Reflect and Plan
- Reflect on the First Half:
- What went well?
- What didn’t meet your expectations?
- Were there any patterns in your performance that stood out (both positive and negative)?
- Set New Goals:
- Use your reflections to identify areas for growth.
- Write down your SMART goals for the rest of the season.
- Create an Action Plan:
- Break your goals into smaller, actionable steps you can work on in practice or training sessions.
Momentum Starts Now
The holiday break doesn’t have to be a time to lose progress—it’s a time to gain clarity. By reflecting on your first half of the season and setting SMART goals, you’ll come back stronger, more focused, and ready to dominate the second half.
